A few days ago, I came across the chat acronym – P911. That’s one for dealing with parents who suddenly come into your room while you are doing ‘something’ on your computer. The definition says – My parents are in the room. P=Parents, and 911=emergency, in other words either drop the subject, or watch the language. Now, most of us having moved out could do with a similar one for our bosses. But why limit it to chat when you can hide an entire tab from their prying eyes with – HideTab.
HideTab is a Firefox extension that hides or unhides tabs. The best things in life are the simplest, and the same axiom applies to the usefulness of this Firefox add-on. Let’s take it for a test run against Peeping Toms.
HideTab starts its life in your browser from the little icon (in the shape of a tab) on your Add-on bar.
The HideTab icon works like a toggle switch. When you click on the icon, a little menu listing your open tabs pops up. Click on any of the tabs in the list and this will disappear (hide). You can also use the keyboard shortcut (CTRL + Q) to hide the current tab. You will notice that the icon turns red when a tab is hidden. Hidden tabs are indicated with a red exclamation mark. Click on the one you want to unhide.
You can also quickly hide all tabs by clicking on – Hide All Tabs. Keyboard shortcut is ALT + Q. All tabs disappear from view and a Google Search page is in place. You can change this ‘panic page’ from the options and give a URL of your own.
The second quickest way after the keyboard shortcut could be the Hide Tab command in the right click context menu.
If you still doubt your quicksilver reflexes, you can place the ‘Paranoia Button’ on the toolbar. The button looks like an IM button (as in the screenshot). You can set it from View – Toolbars – Customize. It also hides all tabs with a click.
Give HideTab a test run in the office tomorrow while playing an online game. I am sure you won’t get the pink slip. Oh, and we’d love to know your wicked methods to hide what you are doing from your boss. You know, we are always into novel stuff.
